Cat inside a Box
If you have a pet feline, we bet you’ve seen your furry friend getting cozy inside a cardboard box more than once. Take the classic black cat costume up a notch with this hilarious cat-inside-a-box costume. It doesn’t even have to be black, you can choose a color that matches your pet’s coat.
Find a large square box (if you don’t have one at home, you can order one from stores like Walmart or Staples) and then punch four holes in each corner. Use twine to make straps to hang the box over your shoulders. Dress in a monochromatic shirt and pants outfit along with your cat ears and some face paint for the nose and whiskers and you have yourself a costume.
Supplies you’ll need:
a large or medium-sized cardboard box
hemp chord
scissors
single hole punch
matching shirt and pants
cat ears headband
face painting sticks
Pac-Man Game
Go retro with this costume inspired by the Pac-Man video game. All you need is a black shirt and pants and some craft materials from Michaels.
Make your Pac-Man and ghosts by cutting the shapes from fabric (you can also make some from paper first to use as stencil on the fabric) and using a hot glue gun to glue wiggle eyes to the ghosts. Once everything has dried, then hot glue your Pac-Man and ghosts onto the black shirt. For added flair, you can cut dark blue fabric into thin strips for the maze. Michaels also sells packs of felt circles that are perfect for makeshift power pellets.
Supplies you’ll need:
a black shirt and pants (or a black dress)
multi-colored fabric squares
pack of wiggle eyes (12mm)
pack of white felt circles
hot glue gun
scissors
Bunch of Grapes
You need not look further than inside your fridge for your next Halloween costume. This bunch of grapes ensemble is cheap, adorable and requires just a little bit of patience. And you can get it all at Michaels. You decide if you want to do a purple or green grape cluster. It’s also easier if you have someone help you pin the balloons onto your clothes. Or you can help your kids with that part.
You’ll want around 30 balloons for this one, along with an air pump for easy inflating. Use a hot glue gun to stick some green felt leaves and pipe cleaners on a headband or a knitted hat for your vine.
Once you’re dressed in all black (or all purple or green) then you’re going to blow up the balloons, tie them, and attach each balloon to your outfit with a safety pin—this is the part where it’d be easier to have someone help you pin the balloons onto your shirt and pants. Then place the leaf and vine headband or hat on your head and you’re all set!
Supplies you’ll need:
around 30 purple or green balloons
balloon hand pump
safety pins
green felt leaves
brown or green pipe cleaners
headband or purple/green knitted hat
hot glue gun
scissors
Cactus
Need a quick, simple costume? Grab a pair of dark green sweats as the base for this easy cactus costume. Make your pricks by cutting white or light green pipe cleaners into two-inch pieces and then hot glue them onto the shirt and pants. If you want, dress it up a bit by gluing a faux flower head to a headband for the finishing touch.
Supplies you’ll need:
a dark green shirt and pants
pack of white or light green pipe cleaners
headband
faux flower
scissors
hot glue gun
Mushroom
Have an all-white outfit handy? Put your crafting skills to work by making a mushroom hat to complete your costume. This is a great option if you have some cardboard laying around, or you can get some at Michaels.
Use measuring tape to get the diameter of your head, and then cut a strip of cardboard using your measurements, attaching it at the ends with a hot glue gun. You’ll then want to cut a few more strips to create a dome shape for the hat, attaching them to the cardboard circle. Cut a big round circle for the brim and then cut a hole in the center for your head.
Use the glue gun to attach some textured white fabric to the bottom of the hat for the mushroom gills. Add some paper for the stuffing, then attach the red fabric to the top with your glue gun. Lastly, cut small white patches for the dots and attach them to the red fabric.
Supplies you’ll need:
cardboard
red and white fabric
textured white fabric for gills
marker for outlining
paper for stuffing
scissors
hot glue gun
